My first post to the Mirror Room. I hope it is acceptable (I'm sure you'll let me know if it's not). I'm pretty new to realism, but I spent a long time on this pic in an effort to live up to the high standard of the work here. C&C is extremely welcome!! I would really like to improve so please give me your honest opinion. Ref: http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/9784/michaeljacksonc10101913.jpg

Airirea @ 2009-03-29 05:36:52
Wow is my thought on this :D

Very close mirror to the original pic. In comparison to the ori pic,the cheek bone is a bit off, the shadows at the neck is a bit too dark, and the lips is a bit pinker?).

But otherwise it is a beautiful painting and looks really like him. Loves your stroke at they eyeslids. The whole thing looks like a mix of soft pastels and oil paint.

GeminiRyoko @ 2009-03-29 22:06:45
This looks almost exactly like the reference picture. A closer look at both of them side by side, i agree with the cheekbone part and the neck being a little too dark. Other than that it looks fantastic

I really love the mouth, its really hard to do teeth, and you did that very well! It looks exactly like him. Good job =)

kungfu05 @ 2009-03-30 01:40:21
HAHA this is so great. You managed to make him look even better! The contrast of the skin is superb. I do have to say this is an interesting subject XD.

Lauraz @ 2009-03-30 10:44:45
Thank you so much for your feedback, guys!! :) *delighted* I agree with your critique, Airirea and GeminiRyoko--you're absolutely right. In retrospect, I should ideally have spent longer on it before posting the "safety save" version, but I was terrified of losing what I'd already done. As it was, I spent my two days of permitted "retouch" time fixing serious structural problems that, typically, I only noticed after taking a break for a couple of hours ^_^ Thanks for your compliments too, all of you; it's good to know I'm not a complete failure at this! XD (kungfu, I'm so pleased you commented on the skin contrast! :) :) :) Not sure what you mean by an "interesting subject"? *g* I just thought it was a lovely photo ^_^)

Africa @ 2009-04-29 19:09:41
Pretty much spitting image of the reference. I even think yours looks better, I had to keep reminding myself which one was the original. Fab job!

Cilia @ 2009-06-14 18:50:38
First of all, I'd like to say THANK YOU for the wonderful comments on my pics, the Joker one in particular. Seems I haven't been around here for a while and my account was suspended due to inactivity, but I just had to re-register so I could drop you a comment, even though it's a bit late :)

About your picture, it's great and especially for a first submission to the mirror room! Well done. I especially like how you mimicked the blurred photo effect on his left shoulder... Also the hair looks so very realistic.
One thing that strikes me though when I look at this, is that his eyes seems to be a little far apart.. Then again I seem to think the same thing when I'm looking at the original xD
All in all a very good pic and I'd love to see more by you!

Angellis @ 2009-06-25 23:35:49
Stop drawing portraits! Did you also draw Farrah Fawcett recently too? Ok...too soon...bad joke...but a little creepy., Good picture. You've captured him well.

SlightlyxxTwisted @ 2009-06-28 22:06:47
Wow, this is amazing! I'm so sad he has passed away, but I know his music will live on! Again, this is an awesome portrait, just beautiful. :)

fuzzyness......i'm such a sucker for kittens....nice testure portrayal, and coolor seems realistic enough. tho the eye color seems a little flat for cats....tho the eyes still look very nice.

CherryStarr @ 2009-01-28 03:45:35
The fur is magnificent! The texture looks photographic almost, this is most definitely one of the best cat oekaki's I have ever seen. Great job :]

I think you'll be alright. XD
All the little texture details on this look very nice.

Africa @ 2008-10-06 10:58:46
Very nice oekaki indeed! What makes me curios is why you added those 'blurry dots' as if the glass had a reflection of something? It's not in the reference, but it doesn't take away from your drawing, in fact it adds that bit more of realisticness. Fab job!

starmist @ 2008-10-06 15:05:59
Wonderful picture, there are some lovely details and colours in this! I agree, the dots definitely add to it =)

Person @ 2008-10-10 02:32:23

You've done an amazing job with this piece.
The lighting on the hair and flesh really pops, the coat as well, though less so on the left side.

If possible, could you please post the ref for this?

The folds in the clothing look so realistic, and you did a wonderful job on his face.

CartoonJessie @ 2008-08-31 09:44:58
This looks too good to be true! I am envious of your talent... Perfection!

kugatsugirl @ 2008-08-31 10:23:38
Stunning *_*
great job on this :D

ShiningGolden @ 2008-09-01 12:09:40
Great job on this! His face is perfect, I especially love the black makeup and shading around his eyes. The attention to details in his coat also excellent.

I would like to point out that the aspect ratio of this picture is different from your ref (the ref is more rectangular, and this is closer to square). That doesn't take away from this beautiful piece of work at all, but I think it may have caused you a challenge when you were drawing! Might be something to watch out for in future pictures.

Cloudy Crystals @ 2008-09-19 00:45:03
Amazing! Love the subject matter. I was going to point out that there seems to be some extra space to the left, but I guess that's the height and width switch. The skin and the lighting work really well, and the texture of the clothes are awesome.

GeminiRyoko @ 2008-09-19 15:47:17
It looks a lot like the reference, impressive. I love all the soft detail. I love The Joker. <3

dragonmist82 @ 2008-09-21 12:28:03

Africa @ 2008-09-28 08:54:24
Absolutely a perfect piece of oekaki. Fantastic rendering of texture, I'd say almost better than the original!! The face expression could not be more spot-on....just a fantabulous piece of work!!

Lauraz @ 2009-03-26 00:21:30
...you are my idol. Seriously. I'd saw off my foot with a dead beaver to have your ability. The quality of the cloth of his jacket blows me away. The texture of his skin is so tangible, the background so complementary. And you did it so QUICKLY!! (I couldn't do this if I had a whole week!) I'm a total newbie, but I'm humbled by the work I've seen here (and yours in particular), but inspired enough that I hope to get up to two-star level and post here myself soon. At that time, maybe, maybe you will be kind enough to critique me--I'd be honoured to learn from you :) Once again, let me say how astounded I am by the quality of this piece and of your other works. redsailor @ 2008-08-23 21:09:14
this is AMAZING! the colors are so crisp, the contrast is perfect, and the shapes are all clearly defined. you've done a beautiful job, it really looks like a real person! the only criticism i have is that the nose is in a different position than in the reference (the area from the nose to the mouth is too large) and the mouth doesn't quite have the same expression as in the photo. but this still screams "living, breathing person" when you look at it. fantastic job!

dragonmist82 @ 2008-09-21 12:30:34
very well polished! The shading is really good as well especially withe the light coming from more than one direction.

Africa @ 2008-09-28 08:50:40
Beautiful work here. Nice understanding of lighting and shading. His skin is so smooth looking, perhaps too smooth looking, my only critique would be a lack of texture on his skin. A bit of roughness wouldn't hurt. But great drawing overall!

Uploading this so my browser won't like, die on me or something.

At least it resembles something like Tim Burton, but I think it could be better. I think I drew the left eye at a really bad angle.

I think it looks very similar to the ref.
Very nice face ;)

weisen1 @ 2008-07-13 16:51:23
It actually came out very similar.
It's probably the shadow beside his right eye, if you look in the ref, it's lighter and defines the shape of the eye more.

Africa @ 2008-07-23 17:35:23
This is quite good. I think you need to define tis hair a bit more to give it that substance and texture it lacks, and like someone else mentioned, the shading on the left eye could be lighter, hence defining the eye more like it is in the reference picture. Good job overall.

Thank you for the comments and critiques!

weisen1 @ 2008-06-24 13:08:27
Still looks quite like her though, just at a different angle..ish.
The neck shadows are really captivating, and the picture looks really nice overall.
However, the shading might be a bit too watery for photo-realism, could you please work on sharpening the details more?

tiamat4eva @ 2008-06-24 17:29:12
I think this has so much resemblance to Hikki, i was so happy to see it. I'm going to throw in some specific crit: The hair seems the most photorealistic, but some areas need some fine blending such as the shirt, and some of the thicker strokes on the hands. The face appears more blended, but since the brush strokes, particularly around the edge, are less blended, it seems less photorealistic. Hope that helps, good luck!

Person @ 2008-06-25 07:40:32
Her eyelashes could be more pronounced, and her irises are too cartoony to resemble a photo. The coloring on her flesh(mainly her face more than anything) is choppy. Ordinarilly this would be good, but since you are going for photorealism you should soften the shading. Her hair needs more detail--perhaps more indivual strands? The best parts of this picture include her shirt shading and the shadow of her chin on her neck.

tiamat4eva @ 2008-06-25 20:03:00
I think in this case choppy is appropriate. The fact that the face isn't totally smooth in addition to the blended details on eyelashes separate this from photorealism. If the goal was to draw this in another room, choppy could be replaced with painterly. This is because it doesn't take away from the overall image, but instead makes a distinction between a lovely piece of artwork that this is, and one that depicts photorealsim.

Person @ 2008-06-26 09:53:06
Lol I didn't mean it like that, Eri. Sorry. ^^; I meant choppy in the fact that you could depict each stroke, not erattic and uncarefully laid. ;_; Sorry if I offended.

pipi @ 2008-06-28 05:26:25
I recognized her right away from the main page! I can't do any sort of realism at all!!! I envy you! >_<

Aside from the "not so photo realistic enough" to fit the theme of the room; I think this picture still great! I truly love your painterly style! <3<3<3

KakeranoTsuki @ 2008-06-28 15:23:11
Uwaaaah~ Hikki~~

I recognized her right away from the front page~ This is really well-done. Her face shape is a bit slender for Hikki, but it still looks like her, so I guess that's okay. The brush strokes do take away from the photorealism, but it looks better like this, in my opinion. C:

Africa @ 2008-07-23 17:27:47
I have no idea who she is, but I really love this image as it is. I agree it is not a photorealistic image, but I think the style you chose suits this oekaki.

CherryStarr @ 2009-01-28 03:57:46
Hikki! I'm so happy to have come across this~ I think you nailed the positioning and shape of the features, especially on her face, very well, but the eyes could use some more detail (in the lashline for example). Also maybe try making some individual hair strands. Regardless of being super-real or not... I still love it :]

You did a gorgeous job here, her lips are so very enticing.
At first glance I actually thought it was another actress, Natalie Dormer from the Tudors XD;;
As beautiful as it is though, her arms and neck look very sketchy, could you go over this a bit more?

And if possible, please post your reference to this picture.

K.N. @ 2008-05-09 10:26:49
I think the lips are well done, but the skin needs moothen and the hair needs detail. To make it more realistic.

ShiningGolden @ 2008-05-09 23:04:48
Great job on this portrait. I love the way you shaded her face, it really brings out the shapes (especially her nose), and also makes her skin look shiny :) Also, great highlights on her lips, they're decadent!

Wow, this picture's huge. 0_0

Very, very good job, though. I've only seen a few photos of her, but I recognized her instantly. I especially like her left eye and her lips.

The shading on the outside of her left nostril seems a little off. Noses are hard. But the proportions and the placement of everything else on her face seems dead on.

Kudos. =D

CherryStarr @ 2009-01-28 03:52:50
Gorgeous drawing, I absolutely love how her lips look. And I like how the hair has minimal detail, it makes me focus on her face more. Awesome job!

I don't think I realized how hard this picture was going to be when I chose it to draw. I can't even tell you how frustrated I got with her face. I still think its slightly off..but seriously, who can draw something to be exactly perfect anyway? I think the angle of her face was the hardest, I probably spent 75% of the time on her face... Frustrating.

Anyway, I am doing a series of my favorite ANTM models starting with my 7th favorite, Adrianne Curry. This was one of the pictures from ANTM Cycle 1, and probably one of my favorite pictures of all time from the show. Too bad Tyra erased her from existence in the world of ANTM..

I know this is going to get critiqued like crazy, oh well, heres the link.
http://carola24sandoval.files.wordpress.com/2007/12/adrianne6_1.jpg

I believe the picture is by Patrick Katzman back in 2003.

All of the above being said, I think this is my best realism picture to date...

i'm glad you endured your frustration because i think it turned out great. :)

RedRose263 @ 2008-03-21 17:09:14
I love it. The hand turned out well, and you made the diamond noticeable. I also think hair is one of the things you do best in your realism. Love love love. period.

weisen1 @ 2008-03-23 02:16:09
That's an awesome job you've done there.
It looks very close to the original, the only difference I can see is the face is thinner.
Personally, I would've been happier if you played with the hair more, since the lighting in the ref for it is gorgeous.

(Edited on March 23, 2008, 4:36 pm)

ShiningGolden @ 2008-03-23 22:17:17
I think you did an excellent job, it's really very close to the reference. I see what you mean about her face being at an awkward angle, but you pulled it off well in the end. I love the way you drew her hand with the chain and rings.

Africa @ 2008-03-26 10:27:09
This looks great, the different tones on her skin look very real, and her expression is great. Great work overall.

frolic_hope @ 2008-04-02 23:47:23
I think t is amazing ! I beleive that if you took the ref picaway from your mind, you woul see how great it is.
The only thing that might have turned out different from the actual pic might be the size of the head.. you seem to have made it slimmer than it actually is, but kept the sae size for the nose ad mouth, and I think that is what mde it look a bit different. Hope it helps you see clearer :)

Lauraz @ 2009-03-26 00:23:39

this is my first attempt at drawing a person. it's from a picture i took of my bf. yay.

the timer is correct.

i want to cry at the background. i thought about making it just black, but i don't know. it's kinda nifty looking, but i dunno if it distracts fromt he simplicity of the picture. *sigh*

but this was fun!

weisen1 @ 2008-02-13 22:10:26
The simplicity of the character is quite nifty.
As for the background, it's off to ta good start, but looks quite scribbly.
Perhaps curtains in the background would make it look a a bit less distracting?

And, if possible, could you please post the ref?

Sing For Absolution @ 2008-02-18 22:15:21
i'm digging the lighting... very mysterious and interesting

Africa @ 2008-02-25 14:26:33
The lighting and shading on this are fab, very dramatic. Although I feel on his left side (our right) the distinction of the edge of his body blends too much with the bg, and it would be nice to see the negative space between that and the arm more pronounced, because my brain keeps interpreting that as one big mass, and so it somewhat deforms his shape. Apart from that, good work!

Robinet @ 2008-02-26 03:12:46

waaaaaaaaaaaaa

The colors are just hard enough, let alone you went through and made a color coded sketch of it BEFORE actually coloring it! that seems like a good way to approach a tough ref pic like this one

also, i think your way of starting at one point then expanding from there is interesting...I would need to do everything at once just so i dont lose track of what color i used for what part

Cilia @ 2007-11-21 03:53:24
For me, it seems more natural to begin with a color sketch wih a picture like this. I want to start with putting down rough shapes and colors, and working towards the details from there.

KuKuKachu @ 2009-05-13 15:33:03
Oh my! this is perfection<3 if you showed this to most anyone I swear they'd think it was the real photograph.

my black and white version of http://www.satelitemusical.net/Jeremias_foto_prensa.jpg
his name is Jeremias one of my fave singers ^^
Im proud of this even tho he doesn't look so much like he should but since Im no good with realism this is an acomplishment for me xD

Cilia @ 2007-10-26 12:49:24
Good job! I agree there are some differences to the reference, but it's still a really good realism imo :)
I especially like the eyes, they look very clear and sharp.

fukuhashi343 @ 2007-10-27 17:51:29
He's hot! Great work on the realism.

weisen1 @ 2007-10-30 11:00:42
His face is a lot longer, which makes his body look too small
It's still really nice though, the background is down to the dot, and the rest are also quite accurate

yesidiaz @ 2007-10-30 12:50:02
yup I noticed that about the face being a bit big argh I just suck at copying stuff xD
*thinks* maybe if i had a grid xD

thank you for pointing out the longness of the face once I knew exactly what to work with it was easy to fix ^^ I think it looks much better now :D

(Edited on October 30, 2007, 1:04 pm)

Cilia @ 2007-10-30 17:04:46
I usually use a simple grid, or rather divide the picture into 4 squares.. I find iit much easier to get the shapes right with that as a guide.

Good job on adjusting the face, it does look much better now :D

Africa @ 2007-10-31 10:15:48
As a realism picture by itself, it's excellent! But there are enough differences to the reference to make them look like 2 different people, to me it even looks like you changed his ethnicity! It's excellent work nonetheless.

yesidiaz @ 2007-10-31 13:18:13
haha don't worry I am aware of that fact xD which in a sense is good because it means I could probably attempt to draw my original characters in realism and have them not look like the reference I used xDDDD like I said before I suck at copying xD

Malory @ 2008-01-09 20:00:51
Ha! Hes a lot hotter in your drawing than in real life! Love his hair and eyes!!

mickey @ 2008-05-31 23:20:37
when i first looked at him he looked like zac efron...lol but when you look at him long enough you notice what it really is

For my sister. I wouldn't say its my best, and it was really hard to draw. I'm so sick of looking at it lol. All I can see now are the flaws. What am I doing? I have a paper on Malcom X due tomorrow at Noon! Anyway, I can't even see the image anymore, everything hurts. Comment if you like :P @__@ *dies*

<3 Oh yeah I decided to change my signature to Twee instead of TGeraci haha.

Oh yeah reference... Well its the most common picture of them XD. I cropped it. http://l.yimg.com/img.tv.yahoo.com/tv/us/img/site/51/13/0000035113_20061021055524.jpg

RedRose263 @ 2007-10-03 15:16:51
I'm loving it! Mario looks perfect! But Karina's face is a bit too long and in the real picture it's tilting more downwards and looking more fierce. But I LOVE LOVE LOVE it! I think you captured the hands very nicely, and Karina's hair is gorgeous.

Marina forever! Keep up the good work!

bakadoodle @ 2007-10-03 16:11:07
very very impressive. The work on his arm boggles the mind, it really looks like it is under the stress of holding her up.

umbreot @ 2007-10-03 17:14:01
Nice, very natural.

weisen1 @ 2007-10-04 10:43:54
Yum, that looks wonderful
His arm hairs are my favourite part.. XD
There's little white spots near the border of the background that you might wanna cover up though :X

Africa @ 2007-10-06 10:07:26
His arm is fabulously drawn and his face is spot on (I dunno who they are, just refering to ref pic). I agree with the points other people mentioned but nice work!

kisstheelf @ 2007-10-10 22:48:06
Love the action in the image. Her expression is very tantalizing.

GeminiRyoko @ 2007-09-25 14:08:05
I really like the way you did her body, like the abdomen looks really good. I like how the skin shines too.

cuteangelffc @ 2007-09-25 16:58:47
I like how you did the skin and the swimsuit. But I think it'd look better if you did the girl's reflection on the floor so she doesn't look like she's floating besides the car. lol It would give that black floor tile feel.

weisen1 @ 2007-10-01 21:38:06
She definitely looks mighty cool
Her body is a gorgeous shade.. her face seems too pale though
It looks a bit unrefined compared to the rest.. you should add in more brown shading tones and less blacks

umbreot @ 2007-10-03 17:14:41
I agree with the reflection thing. I like how the out fit matches with her lip color.

Africa @ 2007-10-06 10:04:17
Good anatomy here..and surface textures! The fingers and feet look somewhat unfinished, and the reflection of her on the floor should be mroe visible, but great drawing still!

I watch the animation to this, and still It astounds me how realistic it looks! Definitely enjoyed how you used different colors to bring a more natural lighting effect to it. Way too awesome to words!

AF-Chan @ 2007-09-23 05:58:30

Africa @ 2007-10-06 10:01:41
Seamless perfection to the ref. Yeah there may be 1 or 2 minute differences, but only due to the fact that it's perfectly HAND DRAWN! Too amazing for words. More!

I had to watch the animation, because it looks like a photo.
This is so amazing and completely life-like.
I love how you've captured the orange and turquoise shades on the black suit.

WithinEachStep @ 2008-11-30 22:19:12
I think you are the best in the world.
Perfect colouring.
I love the lips especially, but one side of the upper lip is a bit smaller in proportions than the other.

WithinEachStep @ 2008-11-30 22:20:36

Damn, I am proud. This turned out better than I expected, and I had a lot of fun doing it. This is my third painting of Roger Daltrey (of The Who) on Oekaki now (so shoot me), but my first of him in this board. I didn't know what to draw for my first time here, and Roger is always challenging to draw (curly hair is harrrrddd). The background is kinda suckage, but I wanted to do something simple so it wouldn't take away the focus from him. I hope this is up to standards, criticism is welcome, thanks.

weisen1 @ 2007-09-14 18:47:03
Mmm.. so nice
And I think you got the right background, it makes me think silk screen.. or something
But yeah, curly hair is hard.. but the eyes are just so friggen gorgeous, they suck me in~

Africa @ 2007-09-22 14:54:52
Nice greyscale you have, and the eyes do stound out particularly well. Cloudy background...me likes.

umbreot @ 2007-10-03 17:16:51
Now that is nice!

Aimee-Oz @ 2008-02-03 16:28:06
Wow! It's a little overly contrasted but it has the feel of graphite drawings. I like the folds in his clothes and his facial details, especially the shading around his nose and cheekbones. It looks a little sketchy in places, but the face! It just pops.
