The shadeing is really great. :)

Red Jello @ 2008-08-14 19:16:31
oh wow. your strokes are so smooth and fluid, and your shading is amazing. You also don't see many people drawing african americans and that makes me like it more ^___^

GeminiRyoko @ 2008-08-17 20:04:55
I really love your shading, I agree it is amazingly smooth. Very nice!

Edit: Retouch'd a tidbit.

Edit 2: Made the background less... black. Will retouch it more after sleep.

Bublgum doesn't look right - at least on my monitor. Not plastic enough?
Probably the shine in the middle is missing?

Velderia @ 2008-07-13 15:10:01
Tish: Hmm.. Bubblegum? I thought that was an egg. O_o

But now that I think about it, it is bubblegum... Silly me. o_o'

weisen1 @ 2008-07-13 16:56:36
The flesh tones came out lovely, and you've got quite a skill at drawing facial hair.

[Edit] Thanks for working on it, it's looking much better :)

Interesting picture, not your typical portrait. The bubblegum looks odd, needs working with the texture, but good try!

Uploading this so my browser won't like, die on me or something.

At least it resembles something like Tim Burton, but I think it could be better. I think I drew the left eye at a really bad angle.

Reference found off of Google Images: http://www.exposay.com/celebrity-photos/tim-burton-the-nightmare-before-christmas-3d-world-premiere-khwujl.jpg

Please critique it, even if you have to be an ass about it. I would really appreciate it, because I think this could be so much better.

Edit: I edited a bit last night. Looks a little better.

I think it looks very similar to the ref.
Very nice face ;)

weisen1 @ 2008-07-13 16:51:23
It actually came out very similar.
It's probably the shadow beside his right eye, if you look in the ref, it's lighter and defines the shape of the eye more.

Africa @ 2008-07-23 17:35:23
This is quite good. I think you need to define tis hair a bit more to give it that substance and texture it lacks, and like someone else mentioned, the shading on the left eye could be lighter, hence defining the eye more like it is in the reference picture. Good job overall.

Thank you for the comments and critiques!

weisen1 @ 2008-06-24 13:08:27
Still looks quite like her though, just at a different angle..ish.
The neck shadows are really captivating, and the picture looks really nice overall.
However, the shading might be a bit too watery for photo-realism, could you please work on sharpening the details more?

tiamat4eva @ 2008-06-24 17:29:12
I think this has so much resemblance to Hikki, i was so happy to see it. I'm going to throw in some specific crit: The hair seems the most photorealistic, but some areas need some fine blending such as the shirt, and some of the thicker strokes on the hands. The face appears more blended, but since the brush strokes, particularly around the edge, are less blended, it seems less photorealistic. Hope that helps, good luck!

Person @ 2008-06-25 07:40:32
Her eyelashes could be more pronounced, and her irises are too cartoony to resemble a photo. The coloring on her flesh(mainly her face more than anything) is choppy. Ordinarilly this would be good, but since you are going for photorealism you should soften the shading. Her hair needs more detail--perhaps more indivual strands? The best parts of this picture include her shirt shading and the shadow of her chin on her neck.

tiamat4eva @ 2008-06-25 20:03:00
I think in this case choppy is appropriate. The fact that the face isn't totally smooth in addition to the blended details on eyelashes separate this from photorealism. If the goal was to draw this in another room, choppy could be replaced with painterly. This is because it doesn't take away from the overall image, but instead makes a distinction between a lovely piece of artwork that this is, and one that depicts photorealsim.

Person @ 2008-06-26 09:53:06
Lol I didn't mean it like that, Eri. Sorry. ^^; I meant choppy in the fact that you could depict each stroke, not erattic and uncarefully laid. ;_; Sorry if I offended.

pipi @ 2008-06-28 05:26:25
I recognized her right away from the main page! I can't do any sort of realism at all!!! I envy you! >_<

Aside from the "not so photo realistic enough" to fit the theme of the room; I think this picture still great! I truly love your painterly style! <3<3<3

KakeranoTsuki @ 2008-06-28 15:23:11
Uwaaaah~ Hikki~~

I recognized her right away from the front page~ This is really well-done. Her face shape is a bit slender for Hikki, but it still looks like her, so I guess that's okay. The brush strokes do take away from the photorealism, but it looks better like this, in my opinion. C:

Africa @ 2008-07-23 17:27:47
I have no idea who she is, but I really love this image as it is. I agree it is not a photorealistic image, but I think the style you chose suits this oekaki.

You did a gorgeous job here, her lips are so very enticing.
At first glance I actually thought it was another actress, Natalie Dormer from the Tudors XD;;
As beautiful as it is though, her arms and neck look very sketchy, could you go over this a bit more?

And if possible, please post your reference to this picture.

K.N. @ 2008-05-09 10:26:49
I think the lips are well done, but the skin needs moothen and the hair needs detail. To make it more realistic.

ShiningGolden @ 2008-05-09 23:04:48
Great job on this portrait. I love the way you shaded her face, it really brings out the shapes (especially her nose), and also makes her skin look shiny :) Also, great highlights on her lips, they're decadent!

Wow, this picture's huge. 0_0

Very, very good job, though. I've only seen a few photos of her, but I recognized her instantly. I especially like her left eye and her lips.

The shading on the outside of her left nostril seems a little off. Noses are hard. But the proportions and the placement of everything else on her face seems dead on.

Kudos. =D

I don't think I realized how hard this picture was going to be when I chose it to draw. I can't even tell you how frustrated I got with her face. I still think its slightly off..but seriously, who can draw something to be exactly perfect anyway? I think the angle of her face was the hardest, I probably spent 75% of the time on her face... Frustrating.

Anyway, I am doing a series of my favorite ANTM models starting with my 7th favorite, Adrianne Curry. This was one of the pictures from ANTM Cycle 1, and probably one of my favorite pictures of all time from the show. Too bad Tyra erased her from existence in the world of ANTM..

I know this is going to get critiqued like crazy, oh well, heres the link.
http://carola24sandoval.files.wordpress.com/2007/12/adrianne6_1.jpg

I believe the picture is by Patrick Katzman back in 2003.

All of the above being said, I think this is my best realism picture to date...

kerrplunk @ 2008-03-21 08:17:13
i'm glad you endured your frustration because i think it turned out great. :)

RedRose263 @ 2008-03-21 17:09:14
I love it. The hand turned out well, and you made the diamond noticeable. I also think hair is one of the things you do best in your realism. Love love love. period.

weisen1 @ 2008-03-23 02:16:09
That's an awesome job you've done there.
It looks very close to the original, the only difference I can see is the face is thinner.
Personally, I would've been happier if you played with the hair more, since the lighting in the ref for it is gorgeous.

(Edited on March 23, 2008, 4:36 pm)

ShiningGolden @ 2008-03-23 22:17:17
I think you did an excellent job, it's really very close to the reference. I see what you mean about her face being at an awkward angle, but you pulled it off well in the end. I love the way you drew her hand with the chain and rings.

Africa @ 2008-03-26 10:27:09
This looks great, the different tones on her skin look very real, and her expression is great. Great work overall.

frolic_hope @ 2008-04-02 23:47:23
I think t is amazing ! I beleive that if you took the ref picaway from your mind, you woul see how great it is.
The only thing that might have turned out different from the actual pic might be the size of the head.. you seem to have made it slimmer than it actually is, but kept the sae size for the nose ad mouth, and I think that is what mde it look a bit different. Hope it helps you see clearer :)

^_^

this is my first attempt at drawing a person. it's from a picture i took of my bf. yay.

the timer is correct.

i want to cry at the background. i thought about making it just black, but i don't know. it's kinda nifty looking, but i dunno if it distracts fromt he simplicity of the picture. *sigh*

but this was fun!

weisen1 @ 2008-02-13 22:10:26
The simplicity of the character is quite nifty.
As for the background, it's off to ta good start, but looks quite scribbly.
Perhaps curtains in the background would make it look a a bit less distracting?

And, if possible, could you please post the ref?

Sing For Absolution @ 2008-02-18 22:15:21
i'm digging the lighting... very mysterious and interesting

Africa @ 2008-02-25 14:26:33
The lighting and shading on this are fab, very dramatic. Although I feel on his left side (our right) the distinction of the edge of his body blends too much with the bg, and it would be nice to see the negative space between that and the arm more pronounced, because my brain keeps interpreting that as one big mass, and so it somewhat deforms his shape. Apart from that, good work!

Robinet @ 2008-02-26 03:12:46
very interesting shadow on the subject...

The resemblance to the original is positively frightening! The wild colours in his face are great.

soy @ 2007-11-21 03:33:58
waaaaaaaaaaaaa

The colors are just hard enough, let alone you went through and made a color coded sketch of it BEFORE actually coloring it! that seems like a good way to approach a tough ref pic like this one

also, i think your way of starting at one point then expanding from there is interesting...I would need to do everything at once just so i dont lose track of what color i used for what part

Cilia @ 2007-11-21 03:53:24
For me, it seems more natural to begin with a color sketch wih a picture like this. I want to start with putting down rough shapes and colors, and working towards the details from there.

Thanks again for all the nice comments <3

Very well done! I enjoy Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and the particular detail in the shirt and glasses really makes it... I also like the background and how it doesn't take anything away from the main focus.

"The colors, duke! The colors!"
Man, this is some awesome lighting and the colors, once again, fantastic.
That's to say nothing of the skill in this level of realism.

Malory @ 2008-05-30 10:39:41
*looks at ref.* *looks at drawing* *looks at ref. again* Uh... is there a difference I am missing or something?

mickey @ 2008-05-31 23:17:44

This is amazing. I just sat here and compared the two and after a while I couldn't remember which was which. This is spot on. I love it.

my black and white version of http://www.satelitemusical.net/Jeremias_foto_prensa.jpg
his name is Jeremias one of my fave singers ^^
Im proud of this even tho he doesn't look so much like he should but since Im no good with realism this is an acomplishment for me xD

Cilia @ 2007-10-26 12:49:24
Good job! I agree there are some differences to the reference, but it's still a really good realism imo :)
I especially like the eyes, they look very clear and sharp.

fukuhashi343 @ 2007-10-27 17:51:29
He's hot! Great work on the realism.

weisen1 @ 2007-10-30 11:00:42
His face is a lot longer, which makes his body look too small
It's still really nice though, the background is down to the dot, and the rest are also quite accurate

yesidiaz @ 2007-10-30 12:50:02
yup I noticed that about the face being a bit big argh I just suck at copying stuff xD
*thinks* maybe if i had a grid xD

thank you for pointing out the longness of the face once I knew exactly what to work with it was easy to fix ^^ I think it looks much better now :D

Cilia @ 2007-10-30 17:04:46
I usually use a simple grid, or rather divide the picture into 4 squares.. I find iit much easier to get the shapes right with that as a guide.

Good job on adjusting the face, it does look much better now :D

Africa @ 2007-10-31 10:15:48
As a realism picture by itself, it's excellent! But there are enough differences to the reference to make them look like 2 different people, to me it even looks like you changed his ethnicity! It's excellent work nonetheless.

yesidiaz @ 2007-10-31 13:18:13
haha don't worry I am aware of that fact xD which in a sense is good because it means I could probably attempt to draw my original characters in realism and have them not look like the reference I used xDDDD like I said before I suck at copying xD

Malory @ 2008-01-09 20:00:51
Ha! Hes a lot hotter in your drawing than in real life! Love his hair and eyes!!

mickey @ 2008-05-31 23:20:37
when i first looked at him he looked like zac efron...lol but when you look at him long enough you notice what it really is

For my sister. I wouldn't say its my best, and it was really hard to draw. I'm so sick of looking at it lol. All I can see now are the flaws. What am I doing? I have a paper on Malcom X due tomorrow at Noon! Anyway, I can't even see the image anymore, everything hurts. Comment if you like :P @__@ *dies*

<3 Oh yeah I decided to change my signature to Twee instead of TGeraci haha.

Oh yeah reference... Well its the most common picture of them XD. I cropped it. http://l.yimg.com/img.tv.yahoo.com/tv/us/img/site/51/13/0000035113_20061021055524.jpg

I'm loving it! Mario looks perfect! But Karina's face is a bit too long and in the real picture it's tilting more downwards and looking more fierce. But I LOVE LOVE LOVE it! I think you captured the hands very nicely, and Karina's hair is gorgeous.

Marina forever! Keep up the good work!

bakadoodle @ 2007-10-03 16:11:07
very very impressive. The work on his arm boggles the mind, it really looks like it is under the stress of holding her up.

umbreot @ 2007-10-03 17:14:01
Nice, very natural.

weisen1 @ 2007-10-04 10:43:54
Yum, that looks wonderful
His arm hairs are my favourite part.. XD
There's little white spots near the border of the background that you might wanna cover up though :X

Africa @ 2007-10-06 10:07:26
His arm is fabulously drawn and his face is spot on (I dunno who they are, just refering to ref pic). I agree with the points other people mentioned but nice work!
