first picture here... hope it's up to par... c&c appreciated :]

edit -- weisen, I smoothed out the shadows a little... is it better now? Oh, one more question, is there a reason I can't retouch it twice? It seems that when I do retouch again it reverts back to the picture I first submitted...

Misa, thanks for your comment... I'm not sure why the pink on the bottom is there either; since I did the character first my mind was at a loss for what to do with the background but the pink seemed like what would match best with the picture. I didn't want to have an overflow of solid color, so I left most of it white since I actually kind of liked it best blank.

Very nice job! Everything is so smoooooth *o*

weisen1 @ 2008-08-12 13:06:20
The colour scheme and character are nice.

[Edit] Thank you for working on this some more, it looks much smoother now.
As for the issue with the retouch, it might be a matter of clearing your internet history. It's best to avoid watching the animation if you plan to retouch because this will mess with the applet.

This is very peaceful and smooth!
The colors used go well and I love how you did the eyes!
However, Im not sure why the pink on the bottom is there, it kind of makes it seem there was supposed to be more.
c: But wonderful still.

TurtleQueen @ 2008-08-13 18:12:41
I love your style, it's so delicate and fine! <3 the way you detailed her eyes makes them stand out particularly nicely, especially her lashes. and the flow of her hair is really lovely too! hope to see more from you :)

arezeus @ 2008-08-14 12:23:53
I love how soft and simple this is
it's really pretty

littlekleine @ 2008-08-16 19:44:54
I love this. It's just beautiful and peaceful.

Her eyes are just intense and the way this is done is so smooth and clean but it still has a painterly feel to it. And the way the hair flows adds soft movement to this image.

Hmm..the background though I think instead of just "pinkness" perhaps make them more pronounced as cherry blossom trees, maybe? Just a suggestion as you have a few flower petals flowing around this lovely lady.

Its still beautiful overall =D

NekoBrimm @ 2008-08-18 00:26:08
Oh she's so pretty. I love the colors here. Such pretty eyes and flow-y hair. <3

weisen1 @ 2008-08-12 13:03:51
This is a very nice picture and the colour scheme is really calming.
The text is also a nice touch, glad you drew it out, adds a lot more personality to the picture :)

littlekleine @ 2008-08-16 19:47:35
Its an intense picture with a lot of emotions flowing through it. The colour scheme expresses emotions of doubt and envy (the greeness). BUt the way the couple holds tightly to each other expresses a sense of hope and a drive to survive and work through whatever is going on.

Eh, I've just been so artistically frustrated lately I'm shocked I managed to make anything at all. Hope it's up to standards, I was just going for something easier. XD Plus I've never tried that kind of facial perspective.

I went in and cleaned up quite a bit.
Any better?

(Edited on July 28, 2008, 6:54 pm)
Okay, is the shading dark enough now?

(Edited on August 9, 2008, 9:14 pm)

MirrePirreParon @ 2008-07-28 08:21:50
I really really like the concept in this picture, her facial expression is so calm. And doing a face in that angle is tricky someties D: but I think you made it quite well. Though the only thing I think could be improved is the hair and cloths, they look a little too blurry. But otherwise than that, I think this is a beutiful image :D

weisen1 @ 2008-07-28 13:20:21
The composition and flow of this picture is great.

[Edit] It looks much better :) . The shading is still a little pale though, perhaps darken it a little?

This is two of my characters for a comic series I'm going to start. Their names are Maddy and Martin. This is just Maddy's wishful thinking (thus the cartoon her in the corner practically drooling). The style of the comic itself will be done more in the chibi-esque Maddy.

weisen1 @ 2008-07-18 00:28:06
Haha, she has some pretty interesting fantasies.
The picture looks good overall, but the shading looks very messy, especially around his face.

This is inspired by a line in the song "Mary's Song" by Taylor Swift. The song has a cute story about a boy and a girl growing up in a small town, falling in love and growing old together. Hopefully I hold onto the idea long enough to finish the other 2 pages I planned.

It's not very often I see this sort of thing done up as an oekaki. Nice attention to detail with the shading from the tree on the girl in the first panel. That sort of thing always gives me such a hard time. X3

MirrePirreParon @ 2008-07-18 08:42:20

Very interesting concept. I'm impressed by the lettering (I have incredible difficulties in any hand written lettering). Perhaps more shades contrasting dark from light? The dripping near the center seems out of place.

weisen1 @ 2008-06-23 00:42:53
The picture as a whole turned out really nicely.
I love the flute too, and that's quite an accurate picture of one.
The picture would look nicer though if the clothing and skin were shaded as nicely as the hair.

Link: A way that you could add depth would be to use more than one layer of shadow.
You've done this with the hair, and the skin could be treated the same way; cel shading is nice, but can sometimes look very flat in darker pictures.

(Edited on June 24, 2008, 1:04 pm)

Linklover158 @ 2008-06-23 11:36:01

tiamat4eva @ 2008-06-23 16:56:57
put your own hands in that position, and look at them in the mirror. it's better not to pick up other peoples styles of shading, but instead to study real thing. this is very lovely, and there's so much detail in the hair.

Linklover158 @ 2008-06-23 17:22:46

Lucrecia @ 2008-06-17 18:15:11
Rarely do i get lured into The Patio but this one caught my eye. I'm always a fan of this paper doll style and this one came out gorgeous. The border thing: Put the main picture on top layer, made gradation on bottom layer, and used erase tool on top layer? However you did it, it works!

weisen1 @ 2008-06-17 23:55:50
Agreed, the border looks nice.
The cut out look really works for this piece too.
The contrast between the detail on the skin and clothes is good but it could pop even more if you worked on the skin a bit more : ).

I like how at first glimpse this feels like a warm piece, but the warm tones also have a coolness about them, especially in the shadows. The light oval around the figure's head reminds me of an icon. :)

Something about the right eye was bothering me a little and I think it's the slightly larger distance away from the nose compared to the left.

I wanted to try out solids... D:
hope the bg is up to standards. I haven't used tones for years -__-'

EDIT2: worked some more on the sea, added a sun also. xD

The solids turned out lovely, especially for the lips.
[Edit2] Stellar, thanks for working on it some more : )

Thats very good~ :3 I love the backround, and especially her hair~

Tobi @ 2008-06-22 02:06:39
Nice solid.
Her hair (?) is cool.

NekoBrimm @ 2008-07-18 11:08:57
That background is beyond awesome. It was totally worth taking the time to redo. <333 Her hair, especially where her ears are, is prettily done. I like how the white catear hair is cascading out with the rest of the blue hair.

KaoruMorite @ 2008-07-18 14:56:25
nice use of colors!

Safety save; lineart is finished, which took about three times as long as I expected :P I now have to go eat lunch and rest my hands for a bit, and then I'll return to color it this afternoon :)

Tancaliel @ 2008-06-04 12:52:33
...aaand we're done. My first Patio pic, woo! Kind of an experiment in doing clothing folds and texturing. I like how the jacket came out; not too sure about the jeans and background though.

Ref is one of my holiday photos from a few years ago (so yeah, that's me :P)

tish @ 2008-06-04 14:32:11
The picture is nice but you look much happier in the photo ;)
You can make this experiment: take you photo, put over it picture you draw at 60% size, then change transparency on upper layer. I cannot name that make you look happier but then photo shows undrneath you do smile. ;)

Robotragicomedy @ 2008-06-06 16:09:43
I'm in love with the texture on the pants.

weisen1 @ 2008-06-07 18:37:32
Those are some amazing textures on the pants :O

[Edit] Thanks for fixing it. The stone work looks great and the trees as well.

Tancaliel @ 2008-06-08 04:07:52
Yeah, I was a bit worried about the bg not being up to scratch, but I'd spent over 5hrs on the pic by then and couldn't really stand to look at it anymore :P So I figured it would have to do. I'll see if I can improve it a bit... I'm afraid it'll have to wait until late this evening or tomorrow morning though as I was just about to go out for most of the day, hope that's OK. I'll try to do something about the neck as well, though that might be hard since I merged the lineart and foreground colors. We'll see.

Edit: there we go, this looks much better, I think. The water is still not that great, but I'm not quite sure how to improve it, and the stone edge and esp. the trees in the background have become much more detailed :) Also fixed the neck a bit.

I really like the way you rendered the pants, as well as the attention to detail in the lighting shown in clothes and shoes.
However, I gotta say, you kind of waffled on your face, you look a lot cuter than you show in this pic ;).

MaddHattre @ 2008-08-15 23:43:22
Yeah, I actually think my favorite part is the trees and the little flowers in the background. O_o Such detail! And the clothes look great!
