It looks like a really good start so far. Katara looks awesome. I love the way the water is swirling around for her waterbending (the shape). Now the water she's bending just needs to look more water-like~.

Based on screencap from Russian cartoon "Moomin amd Magic Hat".
(don't say I never seen how Moomin look. It's Soviet era animators who didn't - or probably they just didn't care. I have 3 cartoons like that on disk. And you know? They talk/act/feel real moomins ;)) ).

Miu-chan desearves fanart. She's one of the few characters that I loved dearly in the Dears series. So polite, proper, and NORMAL (for a Dears). Tried to go with Peach-Pits style for this but I'm not sure how well that worked out, really.

I like the coloring style used on her. Slow going but worth the effort, I think. <3

SuketchiLT: Thank you, that is really the most comprehensive and insightful critique I've gotten in a long time. A lot of times, when I try to copy a picture, I do feel a certain "disconnect" with reality I see in them. So what you have proposed here about my anime background makes a lot of sense to me. I'll keep what you said in mind for future pictures. Thanks again ;)!

I like your style, it has minimal shading that still manages to tell the brain "Think of this as a 3-D image." I also like that your strokes are visible, and the colors you used have a nice dulled autumn look. I wouldn't say that you butchered the faces, but your anime style shows through. Anime asks the artist to think "How do I want to interpret what I see?" For example, the eyebrow you gave the girl is very thin and curves a certain way that can give a troubled or angry look. It often shows up in anime because it is a simple elipse. But if you look at the reference image, the eyebrows are a little thicker and have a calmer, almost sad look. When making something like a portrait, you can't use the anime "How do I want to interepret this," you need to think "What do I really see?" When I make portraits, I think of each shadow and contour as its own individual shape, and not necessarily an eye or a nose. Once I've finished, I can tweak it more to make it fit the person's proportions better. Your anime background deleted the slight bump on the bridge of the peoples' noses, altered the guy's cheek contour, and pointed the corner of the girl's mouth. I'm not saying all of this to pester you or try to make myself sound like an expert, (I'm actually dissatisfied with almost every piece I've made. You can't find much of my work on Oekaki, but you'd be better of checking Sheezyart.) I'm just trying to point out the effects cartoon-work can have on an observation piece. Art schools often try to discourage cartoon-work and the copying of photos because of how it can skew a person's perception. Anyway, I really like the way you made this piece, it is well executed.

Sometimes if it's close enough, it's good enough, I think. They certianly look believeably human and the tension between them is ALL THERE. <3 You really got the mood pretty down pat. :)

Everything else I'd have to say would be nothing but oogling your drawing style when it comes to capturing realism. <3333

No, not butchered! The faces are actually very similar to the reference... I don't think it's a bad thing to slightly stylize some of their features, it compliments the painterly style of the image.

This is the picture of a thousand aggravations; I had it 99% finished when suddenly Shi Painter decided OH HAY DELETE. The ever-patient Marbles re-uploaded a screenshot I took of it about 50% done, but Shi refused to give me any kind of ability to retouch, upon which Marbles kindly re-uploaded it as a PaintBBS.

The detail and realism on this is really gorgeous! I really adore how his hair drapes down and the details in his eyelashes and lips. The shading on the neck is so well done as well and really shows depth.

[Edit] Since Tsuta has pointed it out, I think it'd be best to clear this up for javaducki. The symbol on neji's head is actually the buddhist symbol for peace (swatsika is clockwise, this one is counterclockwise). Hopefully nobody mistakens it for the swatsika and everyone continues to appreciate the picture symbols or no.

Just one thing... people always put this nazi like symbol on his forehead (I've seen it in many others neji fanart) ... but the actual symbol from the show isn't like that, it's different. I don't know if it's like that in the manga but then people should still draw the one from the anime, at least it isn't offensive... but I guess I'm an idiot for thinking that, meh.

Edit: I'm sorry, like I said, people generally think I'm a idiot for freaking out each time I see that symbol. And I didn't know it was that way in the manga. I think it wasn't for nothing that they changed it for the anime, but anyway, it doesn't remove quality from your drawing. I just think it's weird that apparently, the manga creator originally used this symbol, even though it's not exactly the same. But like I said, I guess it's just my problem. I'm not even a jew if you wondered. I just think wannabe nazis are freaks and there are so much on the internet that I get defensive over nothing, sometime. But it's still a very beautiful portrait worthy to be archived (sorry about the novel, I felt like I should explain myself)

Tsuta: I just used a manga picture as referrence. The symbol actually isn't the same as the swastika (with the little curlie things at the end). At least I don't view it that way.

I don't watch much Naruto, but your version o Neji is all sorts of awesome. I especially love the eyes and the lips. :) I could stare at those lips all day, the way you did the shading makes me envious.
